This paper describes the design and measurement results of a high speed optical avalanche photodiode (APD) receiver produced in a standard BiCMOS process. The receiver is intended to be used in an optical wireless communication scenario and therefore has a large-area photodiode, high dynamic range and a dc photocurrent rejection loop. The receiver reaches the sensitivity of −31.8 dBm at 1 Gbit/s and −29.7 dBm at 2 Gbit/s for a bit error rate BER = 10−9 at a wavelength of 675 nm.
