The paper presents a novel idea to detect transient single-phase-to-ground fault based on current travelling waves in power distribution system with neutral non-effectively grounded, and an implemented scheme of protective relays based on current travelling waves and power-frequency voltages, which can identify not only permanent single-phase-to-ground faulted feeder but transient faulted feeder,...
This paper introduces a method for marine system fault location which uses the voltage and current transient information measured at a power supply point and the remote point beyond the fault location to estimate the fault position. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated by computer simulation and also a laboratory experimental test.
Modern microprocessor-based low-impedance differential relays use a percentage differential principle that utilizes traditional dual slope characteristics. Many differential mis-operations occur with these traditional methods as a result of CT saturation, DC offset, or current subsidence. One reason is because the traditional operating and restraining principles rely heavily on the current magnitude,...
In a power system network, an unbalanced voltage condition can occur due to various reasons. Excessive voltage unbalance has become an issue of concern in power quality at network level, leading to numerous problems. This calls for a stringent management of unbalanced. There are several codes of practice to advise and to enforce network operating conditions to keep system unbalance within specific...
In the traditional domain of teleprotection signalling, there is a recognised triangle of performance. This triangle depends upon the required speed of communication, the expected dependability of the command, and the security of receipt. These three aspects are interlinked, and the correct balance of each is required in order to offer the traditional functionality such as permissive signalling, blocking...
This paper discusses the behaviour of both current- and voltage transformers under low-burden conditions. It is shown that this behaviour is basically linear under steady-state conditions. Moreover, there is a duality between the equations for VT and CT. Recommendations and possible mitigation strategies in case of low burden on the secondary side of measurement transformers are discussed.
Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method is a novel time-frequency analysis tool to analyse non-stationary signals, which decomposes the signal concerned into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) modulated in terms of both amplitude and frequency. The original version of EMD, however, suffers from an algorithm difficulty to separate two individual components, frequencies of which are within an octave...
