This paper presents the design and implementation of an electronic ballast for powering a fluorescent lamp. The purpose of this work is to improve the efficiency of the ballast by implementing a Series Resonant Inverter (SRI) in half-bridge configuration instead classic Series-Parallel Resonant (SPRI); in order to allow to provide the voltage steady state of the lamp. By other hand, this DC-AC converter...
The knowledge of the “state of practice” enables to improve knowledge transfer processes to industry, to know the processes and development techniques in use and to identify areas of interest in the industry that can be addressed by the academy. In order to know the status of the use of Requirements Engineering was developed an experimental investigation. The aim of the research was to identify Requirements...
The ontological change, understood as the process that allows to represent, implement, maintain and propagate the update of an ontology, it is managed mainly from two perspectives: version control and ontological evolution. Among the alternatives proposed management is supported management in conceptual models, where abstraction implementation language used in the construction and deployment of ontology...
Microcalcifications are tiny calcium accumulations in the breast and are a warning sign of possible breast carcinoma in the early stages of its formation, so it is highly important for radiologists to identify them in a digital mammography and also to be able to discern in which category of BIRADS they belong. In this study the focus is to classify into BIRADS 2, 3 and 4, categories in which the advance...
This work consists in a wireless sensor network implementation(in the future WSN), wireless data networks and mobile phone service in order to follow people whose situation in the daily life is alone, isolated or with a particular impaired, making possible the alarms signal sending to the customized recipients in the application in use. This system is designed to detect or prevent different domestic...
Ultrasound images are widely used for medical diagnosis and for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) in the industry. Among alternative imaging methods there are the Phased Array techniques, which allow processing ultrasound signals in real time and generating focused images within certain limits. On the other hand, there are synthetic aperture techniques, commonly called SAFT, which are post-processing...
Nowadays several developing countries must to face several problems related with the lack of personnel, resources or adequate health-care structures to attend children with disabilities and communication disorders. Some studies of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other organizations point that in some countries of Africa exists one Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) per each 2 to 4 million people,...
This work develops the implementation of a network of devices with active sensors[1] to capture online data related of the physical maturation of the vineyards of Malbec[2][3] in middle west Argentina, the transmission of the collected data to an information concentrator through wireless networks, the storage of the data in a repository residing on a portable personal computer and the subsequent process...
Recent studies provided by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) claim that 275 million children are victims of violence in the world. An important percentage of these children must be separated from their families to be placed in infant protection institutions, where, it is estimated, about 8 million children live nowadays. However, in developing countries the most of these institutions do...
This work presents the design and verification of a wireless communication protocol to be integrated in an embedded application. The system has been designed to be installed on wild vicuñas living in the Andean environment of the north-west of Argentina. The objective is to monitor the seasonal migration of vicuna herds. The mobile embedded system is attached to an animal and transmits on demand to...
The semiarid areas of Manabí province in Ecuador are notably decertified due to overgrazing for animal production. In this study, a selection of the best alternative plants as food for livestock using the entropy-weight method, which is based on Shannon entropy theory, is developed. The entropy-weight method was applied to calculate the criteria weights; and then, the studied plants were ranked according...
We present an implementation in graphical processing units of a numerical algorithm for the simulation of the nonlinear propagation of pulses in optical fibers. The implementation uses NVidia's cuFFT library to perform the large number of FFTs calculations required and parallelizes all vector sums and products. We show up to 50 × speedups as compared to a single-core implementation on a PC.
Since the emergence of more sophisticated interaction devices, Human Computer Interaction (HCI) science has extended in all forms, where Non-Verbal Communication (NVC) is one of added issues. In this context, the use of gestures (actions expressed by body, face, and/or hands) as a natural solution for applications that require hands-free and no touch interaction with computers has been suggested,...
This paper presents a probabilistic methodology applied to FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) logical structures known as basic building blocks, namely: CLBs (Complex Logic Blocks), usually consisting of LUTs (Look-up Tables) and biestables (flip-flops), PSWs (Programmable Switch Matrixes), IOBs (Input-Output Blocks), SMRAs (Static Random Access Memories) and CBs (Connection blocks). The scope...
Social impact assessment (SIA) has become an important factor for social conflicts prevention. In this study, we conducted SIA using the center-point triangular whitenization weight functions (CTWF) method, which is based on grey systems theory. A case study was conducted on a hydrocarbon exploration project located in the Gulf of Valencia, Spain. Two stakeholder groups and four evaluation criteria...
In today society there has been an increase in the number of elderly people that can fend for themselves. However, there are certain risks related to age such as falls, blood pressure or heart problems among others, that can result in serious consequences to the person. The objective of this study is the development of a system oriented IoT, which can be acquired by the low income population, allowing...
Language analysis has always been a popular subject in computer science; henceforth a vast knowledge base for compiler construction is available nowadays and consequently one can devise several models that provide efficient methods to determine the acceptance of a programming language, either at a lexical, syntactic or semantic level. By evaluating and analyzing existing techniques, we have noticed...
The present paper is a brief history of the evolution of HPC at a research institution in Argentina. In addition to the historical review, we would like to show that two components are necessary in important projects: knowledge and Government's interest.
