Context-awareness is a key requirement in many of today's networks, services and applications. Context Management systems are in this respect used to provide access to distributed, dynamic context information. The reliability of remotely accessed dynamic context information is challenged by network delay, packet drop probability, information dynamics and the access strategies taken. QoS classification...
Triple modular redundancy (TMR) is a common method to implement fault-tolerant circuits. Traditionally, TMR is realized by triplication of components. In order to reduce the area overhead of TMR another approach was proposed on coarse grained reconfigurable architectures (CGRAs). In that approach spare functional units (FUs) are used for redundant computation of results. However, it was not shown...
We investigate the reduction of atomic broadcast to consensus in systems with Byzantine faults. Among the several definitions of Byzantine consensus that differ only by their validity property, we identify those equivalent to atomic broadcast. Finally, we give the first deterministic atomic broadcast reduction with a constant time complexity with respect to consensus.
Context aware network services are a new and inter- esting way to enhance network users experience. A context aware application/service enhances network performance in relation to dynamic context information, e.g. mobility, location and device information as it senses and reacts to environment changes. The reliability of the information accessed is a key factor in achieving reliable context aware...
Disaster areas typical to deal with unexpected and sudden disasters, such as earthquakes and terrorist attacks, can take advantage of context-awareness, namely the capability of providing applications with full awareness of current execution context, to increase the possibility of saving human lives. Unfortunately, context-aware services in disaster areas require efficient and reliable context data...
Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) has been proposed as a global overlay architecture to provide network connectivity in challenged environments such as deep-space communications field. Bundle Protocol along with its convergence layer protocols transform end-to-end reliability into questionable hop-by-hop reliable communication and imposes a two-tier routing policy that allows flexible routes only within...
Parallelism has often been used to improve the reliability and efficiency of a variety of different engineering systems. In this paper, we quantify the efficiency of parallelism in systems that are prone to failures and exhibit power law processing durations. We focus on the context of transmitting a data unit in communication networks, where parallelism can be achieved by multipath transmission (e...
As the number of application areas for wireless technologies grows, the need for providing both predictable and reliable communication over wireless networks becomes apparent. Cooperative embedded systems for industrial automation are one example of systems with these needs. Previously, we developed a framework for reliable real-time communication in a single-hop wireless network with a logical star...
Sensory data also known as Geospatial data is collected in-situ or remotely by different types of sensors from different geographic locations, by different agencies and over a period of time. A vast amount of data is processed via Web services. The quality of the techniques, models and algorithms applied along the processing chain in transforming sensory data critically influences the quality of the...
Context management systems allow services and application easy access to remote dynamic context elements, in turns allow these to adapt to the users context. The fact that most information is dynamic and changes value over time, leads to potential risk of obtaining information mismatching the true value due to the communication delay. The probability for this we call the mismatch probability. Obtaining...
