We discuss FPGA implementations of object (such as face) detectors in video streams using the accurate Haar-feature based algorithm. Rather than creating one implementation for one FPGA, we develop a method to generate a series of implementations that have different size and performance to target different FPGA devices. The automatic generation was enabled by custom design space exploration on a particular...
Localization of the eyes and mouth in face images is very important for accurate classification in automatic face recognition systems. The alignment of unknown face images with templates generally improves the performance of the face recognition system, and this process uses locations of the eyes and mouth. In this work, we compare different features (gray-level values, distance transform features,...
Face segmentation is an important processing step in a typically face-based person identification system. This paper presents a modified K-means clustering and fusion approach for face region extraction from colorful images of video sequences. It is based on L*a*b* color space analysis and consists of three processing steps: color number estimation, color region clustering, and face region post processing...
In this paper, we use Genetic and Evolutionary Computation (GEC) to optimize the weights assigned to the biometric modalities of a multi-biometric system for score-level fusion. Our results show that GEC-based multi-biometric fusion provides a significant improvement in the recognition accuracy over evenly fused biometric modalities, increasing the accuracy from 90.77% to 95.24%.
Face recognition is one of the most important tasks in computer vision and Biometrics. Texture is an important spatial feature useful for identifying objects or regions of interest in an image. Texture based face recognition is widely used in many applications. LBP method is most successful for face recognition. It is based on characterizing the local image texture by local texture patterns. In this...
Matching face image under assorted lighting conditions is a challenging task in a face recognition system (FRS). The feature extraction method used in Local Binary Pattern (LBP) fails in detecting the eye position and it is less sensitive to noise in uniform image regions. This paper proposes an Advanced Ternary Pattern (ATP) feature set to overcome these issues. The issue on noise sensitivity in...
In image composition, the inconsistent illumination of the source images is one of the major problems for seamless stitching of separated patches. The Poisson image editing is a sound technique for seamless image composition. In this paper, we have generalized and improved this technique and applied it onto solving the illumination discontinuity problem for facial image composition. Toward stitched...
In this paper, PCA based modeling of geometric structure of the face for automatic face detection is presented. The method improves the face detection rate and limits the search space. Skin Color Modeling (SCM) is one of the best face detection techniques for image and video. However, feature selection is very important for even better template matching performance in terms of detection rate and time...
When someone is standing in front of a presentation screen, the contrast between the projector light and the indoor illumination is, as a rule, too great. This causes frequent contraction of the pupils of a person's eyes and thereby great discomfort. In this paper we use both an embedded system and a Webcam to design a digital projector which by using image processing methods reduces dazzle in the...
We have developed a pointing user interface system that can effectively be implemented in a TV. Since pointing operations have become popular for intuitive game consoles, people recognize its ease of use. Unlike game consoles, an expensive pointing device cannot be employed for TVs because it is a very cost-sensitive product. On the other hand, an image sensor has recently been implemented in a TV...
Face recognition systems play a vital role in many applications including surveillance, biometrics and security. In this work, we present a complete real-time face recognition system consisting of a face detection, a recognition and a downsampling module using an FPGA. Our system provides an end-to-end solution for face recognition; it receives video input from a camera, detects the locations of the...
Due to widespread broadband connections in normal households, the use of video chats via Internet is no longer limited to business meetings. However, the camera configuration usually makes it impossible to achieve direct eye contact between the conversational partners. This effect can be compensated using virtual view synthesis methods based on disparity maps. The virtual camera is positioned “behind”...
We propose a novel method to automatically detect and extract the video modality of the sound sources that are present in a scene. For this purpose, we first assess the synchrony between the moving objects captured with a video camera and the sounds recorded by a microphone. Next, video regions presenting a high coherence with the soundtrack are automatically labelled as being part of the source....
This paper presents a hybrid method for face detection in color images. The well known Haar feature-based face detector developed by Viola and Jones (VJ), that has been designed for gray-scale images is combined with a skin-color filter, which provides complementary information in color images. The image is first passed through a Haar-Feature based face detector, which is adjusted such that it is...
Car license plate detection is a basic task in ITS. A MSER license plate detection method is proposed in the paper constrained by some priori knowledges of license plate. First the input image is pre-processed with grayscaling and gray stretching, etc, and then, the candidate MSER(Maximally Stable Extremal Region) license plate regions are chosen according to the pixel sum, the scale and length-width...
In a real-time face recognition system, complex background that occurs in an image or video can degrade the accuracy of both face detection and recognition due to the uncontrolled environment. However, few studies have been proposed to address this issue. In this paper, we propose an adaptive skin color model to make the system more reliable. First, real face region is elected among face-like regions...
In view of the Kirsch edge detection algorithm's shortage, a method of improved Kirsch human face edge detection was proposed. First, this method smoothed the original image with Gaussian filter, calculated its gradient image. Then, this method calculated the gradient image using the improved Kirsch algorithm, and extract edge according T1 and T2 two. Computer simulation experiments indicated that...
This paper presents a method for image retrieval using genetic algorithm and bags of pixel. This technique makes it possible to select important parts of image for retrieval. Closed space of pixels takes advantage of automatic conformity approximation and indicates the increase of meaningful linear variations such as morphing and transitions. Selecting bags of pixels and PCA, we can retrieve images...
Facial Expression plays a vital role in the identification of Emotions and comprehension level of the students in the virtual classrooms. Expressions that signal emotions include muscle movements such as raising the eyebrows, wrinkling the brow (the forehead or eyebrow), rolling the eyes or curling the lip. Here, we propose an efficient method for identifying the expressions of the students to recognize...
Recently, Template matching approach has been widely used to locate faces with various pose, illumination and clutter background. Normalized Cross-correlation (NCC) is an effective and simple measurement method to compute the similarity matching between the stored faces templates and the rectangular blocks of the input image to locate the face position. However, localization error occurs very often...
