Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used to evaluate genetic diversity among 13 soil Pénicillium strains originating from widely dispersed areas. Twenty one of the 34 synthetic random primers were found to identify polymorphism in amplification products. The results show a high level of diversity of RAPD markers among the strains. All the strains could be identified by their characteristic...
The activity of ciprofloxacin, sparfloxacin and moxifloxacin was determined for 205 Enterococcus faecalis isolates from patients of five hospitals (Warsaw, Poland; collected from 2000 to 2002). Ciprofloxacin resistant and intermediate isolates were numerous (53.7%). Among them, highly resistant (MIC≥16 mg/l) isolates predominated (98%). Isolates resistant to ciprofloxacin were also resistant to sparfloxacin...
Antibacterial and antifungal activity of 2,4-dihydro-[1,2,4]triazol-3-one derivatives were examined by the disc-diffusion method (growth inhibition zone diameter in agar medium). The MIC's for the most active agents were determined. Of all the tested compounds, aminomethy1 derivatives of 2,4-dihydro-[1,2,4]triazol-3-one exhibit activity against the majority of microorganisms studied.
Two typing methods were evaluated, utilizing 62 clinical strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, to assess their usefulness as tools to study the bacterial diversity within this complex group. Genetic diversity was determined by PCR ribotyping and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) PCR. By these methods, 9 and 36 genotypes were found, respectively. The result showed that ERIC PCR analysis...
The aim of this study was to test the potential diagnostic usefulness of recombinant Toxoplasma gondii rhoptry antigens, ROP2 and ROP4, with respect to toxoplasmosis detection and infection phase distinction in laboratory mouce by determining specific serum IgM and IgG antibodies with the use of indirect ELISA technique. The mice antibody response to ROP antigens was significantly higher in the IgM...
Marine actinomycetes were isolated from sediment samples collected from Pitchavaram mangrove ecosystem situated along the southeast coast of India. Maximum actinomycete population was noted in rhizosphere region. About 38% of the isolates produced L-asparaginase. One potential strain KUA106 produced higher level of enzyme using tryptone glucose yeast extract medium. Based on the studied phenotypic...
In the milk industry in India, buffalo breeds are most commonly used for milk production. Efficiency of fiber digestion in ruminants is critical for animal productivity. Bacteria play an important role in fiber digestion and utilization. Absolute quantification real-time PCR was used to quantify ten bacterial species in rumen fluid of Surti buffalo fed green fodder, dry roughage and compound concentrate...
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the ability of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) to colonize chosen organs of chicks infected intratracheally (group A1), or intravenously (group A2), with the use of bacteriological methods and PCR. The bacteriological methods enabled to reisolate ORT bacteria from trachea and lungs of the birds from group A1 only on day 3 and 6 after infection. The...
Our Department of General Microbiology created a wide collection of P. penneri isolates and classified most of them into 19 different O-serogroups. This work describes the classification of 12 remaining P. penneri strains. The lipopolysaccharides extracted from P. penneri strains were tested in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with selected O-antisera against Proteus sp. strains. Homologous...
The objectives of the investigation presented in this paper were: to examine the frequency of P. mirabilis isolation from catheters and assess the complexity of multi-species biofilms which these bacteria form, as well as to determine the vulnerability of planktonic and sessile P. mirabilis populations to popular antibiotics and compare it to the susceptibility of other Gram-negative bacteria isolated...
