Durch die Hüftarthroskopie ist eine exakte Darstellung der intraartikulären Strukturen bei der Diagnostik möglich, und sie ist diesbezüglich den nichtinvasiven Verfahren wie der Magnetresonanztomographie überlegen. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Gelenken ist der Zugang zum Hüftgelenk durch den ausgedehnten Weichteilmantel und die straffe Kapsel erschwert. Grundvoraussetzung zur Arthroskopie ist eine exakte Lagerung, welche eine ausreichende Distraktion des Gelenks ermöglich. Die Hüftarthroskopie hat sich therapeutisch für eine Reihe von Diagnosen bewährt, wie zur Entfernung freier Gelenkkörper, zur Versorgung von Rupturen des Lig. capitis femoris, für Labrumrefixationen, zur Knorpelabrasionsarthroplastik und zur Mikrofrakturierung. Auch wird sie bei bestimmten Formen des femoroazetabularen Impingements zur Konturierung des Femurkopf-Schenkelhals-Übergangs eingesetzt.
