A new divalent ytterbium complex, [{(L^Ph)Yb^II(Et₂O)(thf)}₂(μ‐KI)] {L^Ph = Ph₂Si(NAr)₂, Ar = 2,6‐iPr₂C₆H₃} (3), was synthesized by the reaction of [(L^Ph)Yb^IIII(thf)₂] (2) and an excess of potassium. The bimetallic ytterbium(II) species with bulky diamido ligands are bridged by a KI molecule with cation–π interactions. These two complexes have been fully characterized, particularly by X‐ray crystallography.

Cat. at rest: [{IrCp*Cl₂}₂] readily catalyzes the redox cyclization of nitron alkynes (e.g., 1) to give azomethine ylides that can then react with electrophiles and π bonds. The unusual O‐bound azomethine complex 2 was isolated and identified as the resting state of the catalyst in the azomethine ylide formation. Cp*=C₅Me₅.
