In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in wireless sensor networks for monitoring systems within the civil and structural engineering community. There has been not only research on wireless sensor networks for monitoring structural performance and health, but also on localization of building materials and construction machinery. Furthermore, wireless sensor networks are due to their...
The concept of distributed energy generation in DC-microgrids is becoming more and more popular, due to the enhanced advantages of energy self-supply and minimizing of conversion losses. Based on a sewage application containing a photovoltaic system and a pump application, this paper describes the individual subsystems of a DC-microgrid. A Matlab/Simulink simulation will be presented to view the behaviour...
This paper presents experiences in embedded education through implementation of vehicle toys. An overview of toy categories is given. Some of the ideas for toys as learning tools are explored. Two case studies are presented - a Summer School and Robot Contest. Specific problems are emphasized and further development ideas are pointed-out.
This paper presents a real-time implementation of a Morse code decoder based on the TMS320C6748 digital signal processor. The hardware platform is the TMS320C6748 DSP development kit LCDK. The decoder processes a noisy audio signal, detects Morse signals, selects the strongest one, extracts its dots and dashes, decodes the Morse code and displays the decoded symbols on the VGA monitor in real-time.
This article documents the results of designing an embedded battery pack for an educational electric kart. The work is based on a previous project where an electric kart drive train was designed. The new lithium ion battery pack design is described and the need for a microcontroller controlled battery balancing system is based. A passive cell balancing solution is implemented as a small cell balancer...
Sensorless field oriented control has always been an area of study with many insecurities, parameter sensitivities and instabilities. In this paper, after giving a short overview of standard sensorless field oriented control algorithms, a new technology by Texas Instruments called “InstaSPIN” will be evaluated. InstaSPIN promises to solve all of the well-known problems of sensorless control as, weak...
This paper describes the implementation of physical models of music instruments. Two models were implemented; guitar and clarinet. The models were implemented on a MIDI synthesizer system. This system consists of a MIDI controller, an OMAP L138 eXperimenters kit and an audio amplifier and loudspeaker. The MIDI keyboard controls the system, activating the synthesizer that runs on the DSP. The DSP synthesizes...
This is an ambitious academic tutored project, oriented to address the gap between standard university labs and real methods of designing ICs in the industry. Offering to our students a global view of the system, we allow them to better approach the PPA's (Power, Performance, Area) targets of each individual part. The learning is based on modeling, simulation, prototyping and characterization, as...
The advent of increasingly powerful low-power processors offers new opportunities for embedded systems. Instead of multiple small microprocessors devoted to a single task, a centralized multi-core processor can be used to run all applications, while ensuring isolation and resources allocation for critical tasks. Seeing a growing interest for bringing virtualization on embedded systems, IP suppliers,...
Compressive sampling theory describes methods to reconstruct signals sampled at sub-Nyquist rates. The theory assumes that the signals are sparse in the frequency domain or in the time domain and requires a random sampling process. This paper describes compressive sampling experiments using a 6 Msps ADC (THS1206) and a C6000 DSP. The sampling instants are defined by pseudorandom binary sequences....
This paper focuses on the design of a low power sensor node that supports wireless communication via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) based on the TI System On Chip (SOC) CC2541 device. The network node integrates sensors for ambient monitoring, e.g. the recording of temperature, 3D acceleration and ambient light measurement. Recorded data can be sent via BLE to any remote device which supports BLE, e.g...
In previous works, a widespread embedded platform, the BeagleBoard xM, was shown to provide sufficient through-put and acceptable latency for live music control and audio signals transmission on standard LAN and WLAN protocols. Although the preliminary work opened the way for further investigations, the software stack did not prove efficient enough to deliver stable audio performance below the perceptual...
An automatic correcting system was designed to be able to correct the programming exercises during a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) about Microcontrollers, followed by thousands of students. Build around the MSP430G Launchpad, it has corrected more then 30'000 submissions in 7 weeks. This document provides general information about the system, the results obtained during a MOOC on the Coursera...
This paper describes a real-time speed estimation of an induction motor (IM) based on the extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The algorithm was implemented on the TMS320F28335 digital signal processor (DSP), which is capable to perform complex mathematical transformations. The proposed vector control system was firstly modelled in MATLAB Simulink and then verified using Code Composer Studio (CCS). An improved...
The welfare of elderly people living alone or in rest homes can be significantly improved with the introduction of technological solutions. However, before start the development of a new commercial product, new ideas and concepts must be quickly validated. The existence of a platform to enable the rapid verification of a solution will be an asset to support the development of a commercial product...
This paper shows how a real-time simulation can be applied for rapid prototyping of an unconventional current regulator in electrical drives. The case study refers to a permanent magnet synchronous motor, with field oriented speed control algorithm arranged in the rotor fixed d-q frame. The novelty introduced in this control scheme is represented by the use of a novel PI current regulator, formerly...
This paper introduces a novel Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) based on a parameterized dataflow Model of Computation (MoC). This RTOS, called Synchronous Parameterized and Interfaced Dataflow Embedded Runtime (SPiDER), aims at efficiently scheduling Parameterized and Interfaced Synchronous Dataflow (PiSDF) graphs on multicore architectures. It exploits features of PiSDF to locate locally static...
We describe the design, manufacture, and deployment of advanced wildlife tracking tags (transmitters) based on integrated transceivers. The tags weigh as little as 2g and cost less than $20 each in relatively small quantities (tens).
In this paper, an industrial robot interface is presented. This is suitable for different subjects related to robotics including robot kinematics control systems and actuators. Hardware and software stages are depicted. Besides, as a manner to teach students to select and calculate electrical components for a robot, it is presented a retrofit of a commercial six-degree of freedom robot arm from Nachi...
For a fast and safe start up and shut down of steam power plant, there is a growing interest in the optimization of turbine bypass controllers and actuators that are mainly used during transients. This work is focused on the development of a simple and fast code for real time simulation of a steam plant for the Hardware In the Loop (HIL) simulation of turbine bypass controllers and actuators. The...
